Who's Truth?

November 1st 2006 16:25
Who's Truth is it Anyway?

It is interesting to ponder how much of the truth we can digest, but whose truth is it anyway?

Christ said: "The truth shall set you free."

Unfortunately the truth also introduces us to the consequences of our actions. Truth is truly a double edged sword. Does the general populace want our politicians to tell the truth? It will mean higher taxes, shouldering uncomfortable burdens and relinquishing unearned comforts. It would mean accepting that we are mere custodians of the world we live in. Being aware of the need to introduce measure to cut back on inustrial emmisions, travel in cars which are more expensive to run but more friendly to the environment.

It would also mean our politicians would have to think beyond tomorrow. They would have to think of more than one strain of thought at a time. They would have to be able to walk and chew gum. I swear, some of them have trouble remembering their own names.

Introduce them to the concept that the sooner we start signing up and doing something for our poor, long suffering planet, the sooner it will make a difference. We can't wait for the convenience of being joined by China and the US. What we achieve, depends on what we do. We need to act now!

But there is a harsher reality. We see the same things differently. Your truth is your conception of reality and you are mistaken, for I am the true custodian of truth. How do I know this? Why because it echoes in my soul with absolute conviction.

By way of example, when our prime minister speak in paranoid tones of security, does he speak for me? Emphatically no. Times may have changed, but I long for the days when we were a more compassionate nation. We used to be known for our willingness to reach out and give a helping hand.

These clamoring voices which cackle and shriek with the hysteria of their certainty of belief bring nothing in the way of willingness to find a middle ground. How can we weave and woo some form of dialogue where they might have to change of view, to see a different reality? Can we do this? Can we move this ideological mountain and get them to open their eyes?

No -- such a direction is foreign to them. This tragically is the path not taken, for this would require the greatest discomfort of all -- this would require a change of direction, a formation of fresh conception.

This would require them to think.

Why was Socrates persecuted, because he corrupted the youth of Athens? No. He was a prick of conscience that black hearted men could not tolerate. He showed them the bitterness of their corruption. He showed them the truth and they hated him for it.

Bread and circuses. Ease of living without sensing what progresses outside our reality. The pursuit of -- what? How many of us share this path to lesser truths? How many of us can in reality take up the burden of living life which is beyond the comfort of a solid, certain existence.

I'm tired of this. It is time to make a change. It will start with a trickle, then a stream, then a river which in turn become a mighty flood. We have the power to make something happen.
