Beyond This Horizon - Beyond This Horizon

The Fruit of Success

November 25th 2006 14:49
Urban Myths and the Path to Success

We all know the story. The writer struggles for years striving for success. Starving for his art, he sits in his attic doing what he can make the magic happen.

And then all of a sudden, the sun shines through and he finds his place in the sun.

Well, I have been looking for that magic moment. I have been patient, truly I have. I've been trying to find my way through. I know that adversity builds character. But I've got enough now, thanks. Can we let the next guy have a turn at character building? It's my turn at the trough! Honest, my dues are paid - fully! I'm paid up member of Perpetual Aspirants International.

Hokay, here I am writing for over 30 years - plays and scripts for film and TV. So far nothing has been produced at a professional level. Now there could be a number of reasons for this. I dunno. I am willing to listen to suggestions.

There is one project in particular which I would like raise. I suppose in one sense it is a bit of docu-drama. What I am looking to do is explore some of the issues now getting exposure on where Aboriginals stand in relation to Australian urban society as a whole. In exploring the relationship between Liv and Michael I want to show his ignorance and growing awareness of the situation as representative of our whole society. In other words we look down on Koori society and blame them for their disadvantaged situation. I also want to explore the theme that if the Koori population as a whole is going to have any chance at all of striving towards a thriving and dynamic network of communities then they must be given the power and resources and control them themselves.

I'm not intending to have the series put these ideas out on a soap box presentation. What I do intend is to show how individuals, both Koori and Euro-Australian can become casualties of a society that doesn't encourage mutual support and communication with one another.

SYNOPSIS WHITE MAN'S BURDEN

Does reconciliation have any real meaning or is it as dead as a bandicoot on a freeway on Friday night after the pub closes? Does Mabo hold any hope of healing some of the wounds? Violence and racism in Australia -- this in the land of Neighbours and Home and Away -- How could it be? Michael and Liv both recognise the ironies in their situation and it is not only that they have different racial and cultural backgrounds.

Enough Whingeing

So enough whingeing. Let's make something happen. Let's make someone happy - me! Let's get this show on the road already.

I'm ready! Any interested producers, please line up on the left!

Sorry, John, I can't line up on the left, but

if I were a producer I'd want to see some written product, you seem to be trying an alternative approach.

Well, at least a little light will shine on you today, you have my comment and my gleaming sunny little logo

Good luck,

katyzzz

Hi Katyzzz

Welcome back. Written product is available to any prodicer wanting to read. All scripts are in .pdf.

I have been in contact with some producers over the years. The challenge is to find someone who loves what I write and is willing to go the distance as far as having time and making the effort to getting it produced.

I have also written several short scripts for those who want to start on a smaller scale.

Take care

John
