Planning Your Independence Day Celebration
June 28th 2009 18:34
The 4th of July falls on a Saturday this year, meaning that most people will enjoy a three day weekend to kick back and enjoy one of America's most important holidays.
It's also a great way for struggling families to enjoy some free or cheap activities.
If you live in a state that authorizes the sell of fireworks, here are a few suggestions that can entertain the kids without costing you hundreds of dollars. Sparklers, especially the large ones can last for minutes and come in many different colors. They are also one of the safer choices. When I was young we used to have bottle rocket and Roman candle wars. It is nothing short of a miracle that I still have my eyesight and all of my limbs. Under the correct supervision these are good choices for flight and loud bangs. If you can't afford a lot of fireworks try buying ones that last for more than two or three seconds. Buy plenty of the parachute toy rockets and you can make a game by whoever finds the parachute gets to light the next firework.
Most larger communities will have some sort of fireworks show and many may have all day activities scheduled. If you are planning on attending please check your local community calendar as a few cities have had to scale back or cancel celebrations because of budget problems or safety concerns stemming from drought conditions.
This holiday is also a great way to teach kids the historical background of the holiday. While you are watching or shooting off fireworks yourself tell kids how fireworks are used to represent our freedoms. You don't have to look any furtherthan Iran to see how difficult it can be to gain your freedom. Everyday someone crosses a fence or builds a handmade raft in hopes of living in a free country with unlimited opportunities.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday.
