Making a Difference!

Making a Difference!

We are in the middle of a conversation and for a moment, we stop as we realise that nothing more need be said. On this topic, we are in agreement.

I look into your eyes for a moment and there is recognition there, just for an instant. We have shared, something -- an atomy -- a tiny corpuscle of common grief, an awareness that we share this tiny fragile globe, rubbing shoulders as we whistle towards our many tomorrows and the terrible challenges that life sometimes brings.

Our children reward us in many tiny ways. We in our love and whishing comfort for them, try to protect them from the barbs and bruises, sometimes even the destruction that can be carried like a shockwave from the past into the future. Somethings we say, are beyond us. We wish they would not happen, but we see no way to change the current, inevitability of some disaster which can smash casually into our existence and leave nothing in its wake, but chaos and dispair.

Yet there are disasters where our little tribe of men and women can smell the threat, the wave of common destruction driving down upon us and we band together and say, no -- this shall not pass. Sometimes our realisation comes too late and the avalanche of destiny swallows us down and takes us into the bowels of annihilation. But this does not always have to be the case.

If I were a prophet seeing clearly into the mists of time, I would be able to turn to others and warn them of what their destiny will bring. Of course we know Cassandra, despite her ability to determine such things, could not convince others to follow her good advice. Yet I do not need to be a prophet to determine some threats to my daughter and her children. It stares balefully at us with greedy, bloody eyes, a beast which threatens to turn our Eden earth into a purple desert strewn with waste, scorched and filled with misery. Is this too much? Are these the words of an hysteric? Couldn't I couch my words in a more moderate tone and argue from a position which is more scientific and more rooted in the logic of reason?

I shall not do this. To follow that path is to risk being lost in an uncaring babble of obsequious, pale forbearance. Rather I would stand for what I believe and shout and scream and be branded a heretic and a fool. But I will be heard. My children's children do not deserve to follow down a path to desolation while I live a life of ease and comfort. Their children do not deserve to live a life devoid of hope bordering on extentinction. Is this too extreme, too much to say, beyond the pale of reasoned speech? No, on the contrary there are too many Caesers and captains of industry, who tell us that there is no choice, no real cause for alarm in these matters. They say our world will cope and survive, that no real threat leads into the lap of tomorrow's fortune.

To them my message is clear. We will mount up and take from you the power that you treat with such cavalier disregard. This land of ours where trees disappear and animals in vain seek to sustain their young, will no longer be yours to control. If you can not take regard for the treasure of what exists today, then what can you care for your children and their future? Only those who are willing to turn back the tide of destruction, can earn our trust. We are custodians of this little earth on which each day we travel sure in the comfort of our being. We hear the doom sayers, but are soothed by other voices who say, it is not so. We can survive, the say. We will prevail. And in a sense there is some truth in this, but only if each and every one of us, each mother's son and daughter, reach out and determine what direction our tomorrows will take. We are the custodians of our tomorrows. As we love our children and as we wish to give them hope for a better world, we must turn the tide.

We must not just diminish the threat, we must enhance the recovery. We must remove all industry, all voices that say it cannot be. It may not happen overnight, but we cannot wait a generation, a decade or even a year to stop the gargantuam pillage of our green and gowing lands. All people, all tribes, all nations can join in this. I would rather be rash and see the fall some great houses tomorrow, so that my children will have a bright and wonderful future to enjoy.

Every step we take in turning this around, is a victory to reason. When our leaders say it is too hard, that we must protect our industries, do not believe them. It is a shallow lie. They are playing with a loaded gun and pretend the danger does not exist. If they say that there are more imortant issues than forests and the animals of the land, do no believe them. Shout them down. Vote them down. Some will say they are not evil men. I say they are worse than evil. They are ignorant, well meaning men. More damage is done by foolish, well meaning men, every day than we can allow. They dig the graves for our children, and this we cannot forgive, we cannot allow and we must not accept.

Take up the challenge. Not some time soon, do it now! The mother of our children is tired and bleeding. She needs to be nurtured and cared for and given the stewardship she deserves. As we love our children so should we lavish the care, love and devotion on our earth and shelter her from too much use.

Share your feelings with others. Grow a wave of caring. When you are tired, rest -- then come back and begin again. There is only one outcome which is acceptable. This is a battle is for the future, for all of us. Man can longer be a passenger, he must be responsible for his tomorrows and for his children and their children yet to come. Failure means extinction!
