I Remember The Alamo, Being Much Larger
April 14th 2011 00:00
Maybe it's because everything is supposed to be bigger in Texas or possibly because the legend of the Alamo is one of the proudest moments to Americans, but seeing it in real life one is taken at how small of an area it encompasses. Before destruction the total acreage of the Alamo measured about 4 acres or around 16,000 square metres. To add to the smallness of the surviving buildings is the megastructures surrounding it. San Antonio has grown up around (and maybe because of the Alamo) so the traveler doesn't see the secluded Alamo, but one in the middle of a spralling downtown city.
It is still a sight to be seen and you can't beat the free admission to view something so important to Texas and America's history.
