National Mustard Museum

August 18th 2010 02:30
Whether I'm traveling for business or pleasure, I always try to check out a city's museums. Even middle sized American towns have some sort of art gallery or local history museum to educate as well as entertain. I enjoy all of these, but it is the off the track and often offbeat collections that are the most fun.

Quirky little attractions like The World's Largest Pez Collection, The Ultimate Macaroni Museum or the Star Wars Toys Hall Of Fame are all places that I have had the joy of visiting.

When planning a recent trip to Wisconsin, I made sure to circle the National Mustard Museum in Middleton as a must see.

To me seeing a lifetime of someone's passion, even if it is a yellow condiment, on display to share with others is an awesome sight to behold. I never knew that so many varieties could be made from a small simple seed. Nor did I know that mustard also had incredible medical uses as an ointment and a curing bath.

If you are in the vicinity of Madison, WI be sure to take an hour and see this fitting tribute to the world's most useful condiment. The tour is free but try to leave a couple of bucks in the tip jar to help keep the museum open for future visitors.

Yeah I know, If you are fortunate enough to visit Fannie Flagg's famous eatery you are supposed to sample their favorite menu item, fried green tomatoes. Sorry, but that just doesn't appeal to my palate.

To coincide with National Parks Week, the Park Service is waiving all fees to the National Parks.

Personally I think that the parks belong to the citizens and should always be free but that is a rant for a different day
