Chicken N' Dumplings at The Whistle Stop Cafe

Yeah I know, If you are fortunate enough to visit Fannie Flagg's famous eatery you are supposed to sample their favorite menu item, fried green tomatoes. Sorry, but that just doesn't appeal to my palate.
I did however recently get to visit the small restaurant made famous in the 1991 Oscar nominated film Fried Green Tomatoes. The eatery is now known as the Irondale Cafe and has been serving hungry train and other travelers since 1928.
The restaurant is setup cafeteria style which honestly is not my favorite way to choose my lunch choices. I always seem to feel rushed and my food ADHD generally kicks in and I tend to grab too many offerings.
I had chicken and dumplings, which was some of the best that I have ever eaten, along with cole slaw and broccoli casserole. I had a piece of cheesecake to finish off my rather heavy lunch.
If you are around the Birmingham, AL area be sure to check out this small slice of Americana film and literature. The employees are super nice and the layout of the seating invites making new friends with fellow customers.
If you can't make it to the restaurant you can use the official recipe to make fried green tomatoes in your own kitchen.
1 medium green tomato per person
salt and pepper
white cornmeal
bacon drippings (or other oil)
Slice tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick, season with salt and pepper and then coat
both sides with cornmeal. In a large skillet, heat enough bacon drippings to coat the bottom of the pan and fry tomatoes until lightly browned on both sides.
"You'll think you've died and gone to heaven!"
