Bird Banding At Fort Morgan

March 9th 2010 16:37

Every spring and fall thousands of exotic migratory birds stop off at Fort Morgan island in Alabama. The small barrier island is the first or last landing spot for thousands of miles and allows the birds to rest their wings and stock up on beer and smokes.

Last year our group banded over 1,000 birds from 87 different species . For the last few years, I've wanted to see one bird in particular, the elusive Ruby Throated Hummingbird. Last year our group banded 28 of these small wonders, all before or after I arrived.

The trip also lets me see a nature in its proper setting, with sea turtles instead of tourists on its white sandy beach and not a building in site other than bird houses of course.

I'll post photos from my trip, hopefully including the camera shy hummingbird.
