Beyond Comfort

Willow can't you see
Weeping willow tree
Never to diminish
Never for me.
Time is the wolf that gnaws upon me.
I remember when they
Laid you out on your mother's tummy.
And as if to say that this birthing
Thing was too much for one so young,
You curled up in a circle
And went to sleep.
.
It was all I could do to contain myself.
I wanted to gently shake you awake
To watch -- to see you stretch
and look into my eyes -- Your eyes
Mirrored dark clenched pools
Beside that scrunched up nose.
Such repose --
Here I was in love again
Being caressed with
Aroma of baby
Fresh from the labour
Of being born.
Such beauty in one so small
Perfect in every line drawn
With fine lush strokes
Fingers, toes, cap of hair
I watched in wonder
At all that was there
At the texture, the detail
That I had never seen - before.
Such feelings overwhelmed me then
And are with me still.
I would that I had shared with you
How much you were wanted. Oh you knew
That you were loved. We told you that.
But this was more --
More intimate somehow.
And now
Lady Day calling
Softly to me
Willo-ow
Willow can't you see.
Now there is only
The shadow memory
The ache
An emptiness beyond comfort
That I can never fill
And time is the wolf
That gnaws upon me. ----------------------------- ------------- 5/4/07
